ArchiTexture Dance Company is a site-specific
Orange County contemporary dance company that specializes in creating
dance in unusual places. Deidre Cavazzi, artistic director and choreographer
for the company, explained, "Site-specific dance means that all
of the movement is inspired by the space in which we are performing.
Before I start rehearsals with the dancers, I take photographs and
make sketches of the space, research the history of the location
itself, and design all of the movement for this environment. Whenever
possible, we also hold rehearsals in the location so that we can
really make this a unique performance."
Locations on the Mission grounds ArchiTexture
dancers will incorporate into their performances include the central
courtyard, the bell wall, the industrial center and the Great Stone
Church. Cavazzi remarked, "The dancers hope to inspire audiences
to take a second look at hidden corners of the Mission, as they
are brought to life through dance."
Cavazzi founded ArchiTexture Dance Company in
2006, after completing her Master of Fine Arts Degree in Dance at
UC Irvine. Over the past two years, she has created dances for city
events in Dana Point and Mission Viejo, has traveled to Boston,
Atlanta and San Francisco to set site-specific dance installations,
and has created a full-length dance performance aboard the historic
tall ship Pilgrim in Dana Point Harbor, using the entire ship as
a stage, with the audience watching from the harbor walkways. Last
year, she also choreographed an evening of literature-based dances
in the three-story Saddleback College Library to celebrate the 25th
anniversary of National Banned Books Week. .
