Mission San Juan Capistrano proudly offers the following education programs for the
2008/2009 school year.


Monday - Thursday:
Mission Matters

 

Mission Matters offers curriculum-based activities that adhere to the content standards and concepts defined by California Department of Education History-Social Science Content Standards. Mission Matters also allows adults and students to actively work together making various products. Students will be encouraged to use their FIVE senses in exploring the past. Mission Matters offers a fun filled presentation and activity that engages students to step back in time and examine the daily lives of Native American Mission workers.

 

Sample projects will include one of the following:

 

Unraveling the Story:
Rope Making offered Mondays & Tuesdays
Following the Acjachemen Footsteps:
Adobe Brick Making offered Wednesdays & Thursdays
A Brand is Forever: Hide Branding:
Hide Branding – by appointment, small groups only, great for Scout groups
A Child’s Life in 1850:
19th Century toys and lifestyle- by appointment, small groups only
 
Cost per person: $3.00
Minimum class size: 15 students
Maximum class size: 140 students
 
This is a 30-45 minute class. Class times vary, please ask for details.


Tuesdays:
Making the Grade with the Mission

- presented by the Discovery Science Center

 

Join the Discovery Science Center staff as we investigate the building blocks of geology during this scientific exploration of the Jewel of San Juan Capistrano. Experiment with designs and materials that strengthen structures as large as Mission walls, or as small as a swallow's nest. This hands-on program aligns with the 4th grade California Science Content Standards (Earth Science 4 a, b; 5 a; and Life Science 3 a, b).

 

Sample activities include:

 

Collect soil samples
Build a Cantenary Arch
Take home a “Science on a Mission” booklet
 
Cost per person: $4.00
Minimum class size: 40 students
Maximum class size: 140 students
1 hour classes: 9:00 am & 10:30 am


Thursdays:

Journeys to the Past

Educator, Jacque Nunez takes students on a journey into the lifestyle of the California Indian, in particular the Acjachemen Nation, which flourished in Southern California hundreds of years before Father Serra. Children experience lively musical storytelling, songs, games, and traditional dances with opportunities to participate. Students leave with a wonderful understanding of environmentalism and what it means to be "keepers of the earth."

 

Cost per person (teachers, chaperones, and students): $3.00
Minimum class size: 150 students
Maximum class size: 300 students
This is a one hour class offered on the following dates by appointment only:

Fridays:

Monday - Friday:
Stay and Play Program
- with Zoomars Petting Zoo

 

After your Mission tour, plan to stay and play at ZOOMARS Petting Zoo located in the heart of San Juan Capistrano (within walking distance of the Mission). At ZOOMARS you will find hundreds of animals to pet, feed, learn from, and love. A shaded picnic area is available. Group leaders will be given a basket of food for students to feed the animals.

Maximum class size: 140 students
Monday - Friday: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Need to let your students run off steam?After your tour is finished and you still have time, visit San Juan Capistrano ’s Historic Town Center Park.
