Upcoming Art Exhibit
"Belles of Capistrano: Four Women
& Their Art"
Soldiers Barracks Gallery
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Daily
October 5, 2008 - January 7, 2009
Patricia Arakelian, Barbara Andolsek, Nancy
Egan and Sharon Rawlins: all four Central or Southern California
based artists, all four women, all four working with paint, all
four viewing the California landscape, its people and specifically
this Mission as inpirations for their work. Still, the moods and
techniques which make up their collective works demonstrate distinct
yet delicately interpreted differences which speak to who they are
as women, and as members of the arts community.
Patricia Arakelian and Sharon Rawlins,
for example, both find their muses in the natural outer beauty of
the landscape around us.
Patricia enjoys expressing a love of nature through
her work, stating, "I am inspired by the early California impressionist
painters. The most exciting thing for me is when I have the opportunity
to paint California missions and ocean scenes. Then I am able to
represent the great power and beauty of history, and of the natural
world."
Sharon, who like Patricia works in the plein
air tradition but prefers watercolor to oil or acrylic, states that,
"finding the lightness of watercolor and the quality of light -
in such magic places as the Southern California coast, Maine, and
Venice - is endlessly fascinating." She also asserts that her challenge
lies in "capturing the unexpected beauty of the everyday, those
small scenes that are monumental, that stay with one throughout
a lifetime, and bring meaning - if only the time is taken to look
and to see."
Barbara Andolsek and Nancy Egan,
on the other hand, prefer a more introspective and spiritual approach
when choosing their subjects.
Barbara believes "the best way to approach a
new painting is dictated by the painting itself", and consequently
she always has a concept in mind "before even picking up a brush
or a paint knife." One of the greatest celebrations of her personal
story was discovering what God's design for her life was meant to
be. Barbara said that art was revealed to be her purpose early on
in life, and if this truly ebullient artist had to describe the
act of painting in just one sentence, "it would contain nearly every
adjective that could be used to convey joy."
Nancy, who works mostly in oil just as Barbara
does, says that "landscape and spiritual images" are currently her
subjects of choice. She is also very aware of her power as an artist,
and is always sure to use this power to produce positive images.
The images she selects "reflect the presence of nature," and she
sums up her work thusly, "My art is my ministry to bring the Divine
to the human world; stirring emotions to raise the human world to
God."
These four women, sharing common artistic themes
which stir the emotions in distinctly different ways, have come
together to create an exhibition that will show who they are as
artists, as members of their communities, and as women. Their breadth
of experience is wide, as they are collectively members of the California
Art Club, Laguna Plein Air Painters of America, Southern California
Plein Air Painters Association, San Clemente Art Club, Oil Painters
of America, Christians in the Visual Arts, National Oil and Acrylic
Painters' Society, and Landscape Artists International, just to
name a few.
The exhibition will begin with an Artists' Reception
and Art Sale on Saturday, October 4th from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
in the Soldiers Barracks Gallery located near the front entrance
of Mission San Juan Capistrano. Guests will have the opportunity
to meet all four artists at the reception, and a portion of proceeds
from the exhibition will be directed towards ongoing preservation
efforts at the historic Mission.
This special exhibition of women's art is included
with paid admission to the Mission during our normal business hours,
and is free as a benefit to our Preservation Society Members.
An Artists' Reception and Sale will be held
on Saturday, October 4, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in the Soldiers
Barracks Gallery at Mission San Juan Capistrano.
